His daughter Gwen Graham posted a statement on X on Tuesday, announcing his death.

Graham, who was 87 years old, was the chair of the Intelligence Committee after the terrorist attacks of 2001 and was against the invasion of Iraq.


Following Graham’s passing, the Florida Democratic Party released the following statement:

“The impact that Bob Graham had on the state of Florida is indescribable. Giant in Florida politics, Bob established the bar for all future elected officials, Republican and Democrat alike. His life was one that most of us could only imagine, one in which he touched the lives of millions with an unmatched dedication to service and a moral compass that never wavered. As they celebrate and grieve for their son, Adele, Gwen, and the entire Graham family, our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Living up to the example set by Bob Graham is ingrained in every Florida Democrat. May we all love and serve Florida the way he did, with a sparkle in our eyes and an insatiable curiosity about the unknown, as we honor his legacy.”

November 9, 1936 – April 16, 2024) was the date of birth for Daniel Robert Graham, an American lawyer, author, and politician. He was the 38th governor of Florida from 1979 to 1987 and the senator from Florida from 1987 to 2005. His party affiliation was the Democratic Party.

Graham, who was born in Coral Gables, Florida, attended Harvard Law School and was elected to the Florida Legislature. Graham was reflected in 1982 and went on to win the 1978 Florida gubernatorial election after serving in both chambers of the legislature. Graham beat out Republican Senator Paula Hawkins in the 1986 Senate race. After serving as a founding member of the Democratic Leadership Council, he rose to the position of Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman. Graham withdrew from the 2004 Democratic presidential primary race prior to the first round of primary voting. Retiring from the Senate in 2004, he declined to run for reflection.

In addition to serving as a member of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and the CIA External Advisory Board, Graham co-chaired the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling. He was employed by the University of Florida, his undergraduate alma mater, at the Bob Graham Centre for Public Service.
